The moringa tree, widely recognized for its nutritional and medicinal properties, is now attracting attention for another remarkable reason. Scientists have discovered that extracts from moringa seeds may help remove harmful microplastics from drinking water with impressive efficiency.
Researchers from Brazil and the United Kingdom recently studied how moringa seed extracts perform in water treatment systems. Their findings revealed that the natural plant-based solution can eliminate a large percentage of microplastic particles from tap water, offering a possible eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical treatments.
Moringa has been used for centuries in different parts of the world for water purification. Ancient civilizations, including Egyptians and Romans, reportedly relied on the plant to improve water quality. Modern scientists are now revisiting these traditional methods as concerns about plastic contamination continue to grow globally.
MICROPLASTICS CONTINUE TO RAISE HEALTH CONCERNS
Microplastics are tiny fragments created when larger plastic products break down over time. These particles are now found nearly everywhere on Earth, including oceans, rivers, soil, food, and even drinking water supplies.
Studies have shown that microplastics can enter the human body through food and water consumption. Researchers have detected them in human organs, bloodstreams, and other tissues, sparking concerns about potential long-term health risks.
Although scientists are still investigating the full impact of microplastics on people, early findings suggest they may interfere with hormones, reproduction, and overall health.
The recent moringa study focused specifically on PVC microplastics, which are considered among the more dangerous types due to their chemical composition and widespread use. Researchers tested extremely small particles and found that moringa seed extracts removed nearly all of them during filtration.
According to the study, the natural treatment achieved an efficiency rate of approximately 98.5%, showing performance similar to chemical coagulants commonly used in modern water treatment plants.
A CLEANER AND MORE SUSTAINABLE WATER TREATMENT METHOD
One reason scientists are excited about moringa seeds is their environmental advantage over chemical alternatives. Traditional water treatment often relies on aluminum-based chemicals, which can create waste and raise toxicity concerns if used excessively.
Moringa seeds, on the other hand, are biodegradable, renewable, and generate less sludge during the purification process. Researchers also found the seeds performed especially well in alkaline water conditions.
Experts say this natural approach could become particularly useful in rural areas and developing communities where access to expensive water treatment chemicals is limited. Since moringa trees grow quickly in warm climates, they may provide a low-cost and sustainable solution for improving drinking water quality.
However, researchers caution that there are still limitations. Large-scale urban water systems would require enormous quantities of moringa seeds to treat high volumes of water. Scientists also noted that using too many seeds may leave organic material behind, requiring additional cleaning steps.
Future research will focus on whether moringa extracts can remove other types of plastics, including nanoplastics, which are even smaller and potentially more dangerous because they can move more easily through the human body.
As plastic pollution continues to increase worldwide, scientists believe innovative and natural filtration methods like moringa seed treatment could play an important role in protecting public health and improving access to cleaner drinking water.
