A six-week-old infant in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, has died from measles, according to the county coroner, as health officials continue to battle a growing outbreak across the state.
The infant died at home on August 18 after receiving palliative care following birth. The child had a rare genetic condition known as Amish lethal microcephaly, which is associated with a significantly shortened life expectancy. Lancaster County Coroner Stephen Diamantoni said the child contracted measles and that the infection caused the death.
The confirmation comes as the Pennsylvania measles outbreak continues to expand. State health officials reported 577 confirmed cases across 37 counties as of September 4, along with 98 hospitalizations and two measles-associated deaths.
Cases Continue to Increase
Pennsylvania has been dealing with its largest ongoing measles outbreak in years. The current outbreak began in late April and has been particularly concentrated in Lancaster County.
Health officials are working with local communities to increase vaccination rates and identify people who may have been exposed to the virus. More than 3,900 MMR vaccine doses have been administered through more than 100 pop-up clinics since the outbreak began.
The Pennsylvania measles outbreak has also placed additional pressure on hospitals. Medical centers have treated children, including very young infants who are too young to receive their routine first measles vaccination.
Doctors say some hospitalized children have required intravenous fluids and oxygen support because of dehydration and illness associated with measles.
Why Measles Is Difficult to Contain
Measles is extremely contagious and can spread before the characteristic rash develops. The virus can also remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left an area.
That makes medical facilities particularly vulnerable to exposure. Hospitals and doctors’ offices have been developing special procedures for suspected measles patients, including separate entrances and isolation arrangements.
The Pennsylvania measles outbreak is also exposing gaps in vaccination coverage. The percentage of Pennsylvania kindergartners vaccinated against measles declined from 96.4% in 2019 to 93.2% in 2025. In Lancaster County, the vaccination rate has fallen even further.
Health experts say approximately 95% vaccination coverage is generally needed to prevent measles from spreading widely within a community.
Vaccination Efforts Intensify
The state’s health department is urging residents to stay current with their measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles.
In communities experiencing active transmission, health professionals are also working with local organizations and trusted community members to reach families who may not regularly visit medical facilities.
The strategy has included holding vaccination clinics in nontraditional locations and offering vaccines directly within affected communities.
A Growing National Concern
Pennsylvania’s situation comes as measles cases rise across the United States. The CDC reported 3,134 confirmed measles cases nationwide as of September 3, making 2026 the country’s highest annual case total in more than three decades.
The Pennsylvania measles outbreak has also become the center of a political dispute over how the recent deaths should be classified and reported. State health officials have identified two measles-associated deaths, while federal officials have been reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
Despite the disagreement, health professionals continue to emphasize prevention. With measles vaccination providing strong protection, doctors say increasing immunization remains one of the most effective ways to slow transmission and protect vulnerable children.
