Walking speed may reveal more about healthy aging than simply how quickly someone can get from one place to another. New research suggests that older people who maintain an unusually brisk walking pace may also experience slower cognitive decline.
Researchers studied adults aged 80 and older and identified a group known as “super movers.” These participants had walking speeds at least 1.5 standard deviations above the average for people of the same age and sex. The study, published in Neurology, examined nearly 4,000 older adults and found that the fastest walkers had about half the risk of developing cognitive impairment.
The findings do not prove that walking faster directly prevents cognitive decline. Instead, they suggest that walking ability may be an important marker of how several systems in the body and brain are aging.
Why Walking Speed Matters
Walking is a complex activity. Moving efficiently requires coordination between the brain, muscles, balance systems, nerves and cardiovascular system.
The researchers found that super movers not only maintained faster movement but also showed slower declines in memory and thinking abilities. Brain imaging indicated that areas of the hippocampus, a region associated with memory, were better preserved among faster-moving participants.
These findings add to research connecting physical activity with cognitive health. Movement can support cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and balance, all of which become increasingly important with age.
Super Movers May Reflect Healthy Aging
The super movers were not simply defined by being active. Their walking speed was compared with that of their age and sex peers, making the classification relative rather than based on one universal pace.
Researchers also found that these exceptionally fast walkers tended to have healthier lifestyles and fewer chronic health problems. Researchers cannot yet determine whether fast walking itself preserves brain function or reflects broader physical resilience.
Because the study was observational, it identified an association rather than proving cause and effect.
Interestingly, postmortem analysis in another group did not find major differences in Alzheimer’s-related brain pathology between super movers and other participants. This suggests that some people may maintain stronger cognitive function despite similar underlying brain changes.
How to Support Brain and Physical Health
The findings do not mean older adults need to force themselves to walk at an unusually fast pace. Instead, maintaining mobility and paying attention to changes in walking ability may be useful.
For people who can exercise safely, regular walking can be a simple way to remain active. Strength training, balance exercises and other physical activities can also support independence as people age.
A noticeable decline in walking speed, balance or coordination may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional, especially if it develops unexpectedly.
The research surrounding fast walking brain health offers another reminder that physical and cognitive aging are closely connected. While more studies are needed to determine whether improving walking speed can directly influence brain health, maintaining regular movement remains an important part of healthy aging.
