You have probably heard it all. Apple just unleashed the new 12 inch 2015 MacBook and everyone is wondering: Is this for real? One input? USB type-C? Where am I supposed to charge my many devices?
Whilst Apple’s move might not feel intuitive at first glance, it might actually be as Neil Armstrong once said:
one small step by a man yet a giant leap for mankind.
Why? Read on!
1. Thunderfast
The 100m world record was set at 9.74 until our extraterrestrial friend Usain Bolt came around. Is he human? The new USB type C is to USB’s what Usain Bolt is to the 100m sprints. Just another league. USB type-C doubles the current throughput from 5 Gbps in standard USBs to 10 Gbps.
2. All in 1
Imagine a universal connection for your phone, TV, computer and other devices. Whilst the USB type C is not yet there it is the closest we’ve ever been. For starters it is able to power computers with its 100 watts. On a second note, USB type-C can function as a gateaway for a variety of other connection standards when used with an “Alternate Mode”. The new Mac, a USB type-C cable and an alternate mode can attach to HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA. More options are thought to come. It’s just a matter of time!
3. Reversible
Hallelujah. It took time but here it is. The USB type-C is reversible. You can plug in the cable with your eyes closed and you’ll still have 100% chance of succeeding. This is not the only bewildering feature. With a USB type-C connector not only will you never plug it the wrong way but you will be able to send power in a bidirectional manner. Yes you heard right. You will be able to send power from your computer to your phone and your phone to your computer with the same cable.
Not everything is a blue sky though. It is true that Apple and others, including Intel and Microsoft worked together to create the standard but there are many companies yet to embrace it. Moreover, the Wireless generation is slowly taking over and soon we might be connecting without the need for cables. What is your take? What do you think about the new MacBook?
