The internet has long been a sanctuary for cat lovers. Feline content dominates social media feeds, wholesome videos rack up millions of views, and cats have cemented themselves as undisputed royalty of online culture. But lately, a couple of well-known faces have dared to challenge that reign, and the backlash has been exactly as fierce as you would expect.
DOECHII SPARKS OUTRAGE WITH ANTI-CAT POST
It started with Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, who took to Threads earlier this week and dropped an opinion that nobody saw coming. With zero warning and maximum confidence, she made her feelings about domestic cats crystal clear.
“People act like it’s a crime to dislike cats when they genuinely aren’t friendly animals,” she wrote, before doubling down with the argument that cats simply were not built for domestic life. She suggested that cat owners only receive affection from their pets after years of effort, and pointed out that many are regularly scratched by the very animals they adore.
Rather than stepping back when the replies flooded in, Doechii held her ground, engaging directly with shocked followers and defending her stance with characteristic boldness. She did, however, soften ever so slightly when fans began posting photos and videos of their affectionate, gentle cats, leaving a comment that simply read “pretty eyes” on one particularly persuasive upload. A small concession, but the internet noticed.
JESSIE BUCKLEY ADDS FUEL TO THE FIRE
As if Doechii’s post had not already stirred enough controversy, a resurfaced clip from late last year poured even more fuel onto the flames. In the video, actress Jessie Buckley, known for her acclaimed role in “Hamnet,” was asked the age-old question alongside co-star Paul Mescal: cats or dogs?
Buckley answered with a single, decisive word: “Dog.” When the interviewer noted the conviction behind her response, she elaborated, stating plainly that she finds cats to be mean. She then launched into a personal story that she herself admitted might get her “cancelled.”
Buckley explained that when she was dating her now-husband Freddie Sorensen, he owned two cats, one of which she described as having “staged a coup” against her. According to Buckley, she would return home to find unpleasant surprises left on her pillow by the disgruntled feline. Eventually, she gave her future husband an ultimatum: the cats or her. With visible delight, she confirmed that she won.
The anecdote did not go down well in certain corners of the internet. Reddit threads quickly emerged labelling her behaviour as unreasonable, while others took a more measured stance, suggesting that while personal preferences are valid, broadcasting a dislike for cats so loudly is perhaps a step too far.
A CULTURAL DIVIDE THAT IS FAR FROM OVER
Cats have always occupied a fascinating space in human culture. From their sacred status in ancient Egypt to their modern role as the unofficial mascots of the internet, they have never really needed defending before. Yet here we are.
It raises an interesting question: would any of this outrage exist if these same celebrities had spoken out against dogs? Almost certainly, the reaction would be far louder and far less forgiving. For now, cat lovers are sharpening their claws, and quite frankly, nobody can blame them.
