A young Colombian woman is facing an extraordinary personal tragedy after surviving a powerful earthquake that killed the rest of her immediate family.
Ana María Saavedra Caycedo, one of three triplet sisters, was rescued from the remains of a collapsed apartment building in Cali following the earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10.
The 23-year-old suffered serious injuries in the collapse, including damage to her pelvis and arms. Relatives said part of a fallen door helped protect her from some of the debris, allowing rescuers to eventually locate her beneath the wreckage.
Her survival, however, was followed by devastating news. Her parents, both of her triplet sisters and an uncle were among those who died in the disaster.
